Orange Rabbit?

13 Jan

I recently purchased a bright orange plastic rabbit for the house (although most agree its a hare I am not budging on rabbit). When I brought it home my house mates were oddly disturbed by its life-like presence, of course I found this quite amusing. The rabbit is here to stay!

Where did I get said rabbit you say?

Strangetrader in Byron Bay, one of the best shops in the Bay for quirky extremely well designed homewares and knick knacs from around the globe, amazing rugs, pillows and one-off show stopping vintage pieces. Ahh this is another one of those shops I just love walking around and picking things up. The owners have become quite used to my weekly visits.

Who made the rabbit you ask?

This wild German man Ottmar Horl casts them along with heaps of other weird and wonderfull animals and fantasy figures. Pretty cool and just a little bit creepy - kind of like if taxidermy could be mass-produced out of plastic!

Pyramid Pendant, Serge Benhayon & Universal Medicine

 Pyramid Pendant

Serge Benhayon

I get a lot of people asking ‘what does the triangle mean’ so I thought it was about time I let all my customers know.

Here is a little back-story. About 6 years ago I got quite sick. Nothing life threatening but I was unwell. It was then I was introduced to a man named Serge Benhayon known as the healer’s healer. I had a few sessions with him at Universal Medicine his local clinic, and it was not until after these sessions that I was feeling like myself again and was ready to heal.

Since then I have been a frequenter of the Universal Medicine clinic and all it has to offer, which is a lot.

So what about the triangle? I also attend the courses that Serge Benhayon presents. In the courses you learn heaps about your true self and many other life useful subjects. One of the things I took with me was the importance of certain angles; as taught by Serge’s teachings from the Ancient Wisdom. What is significant about the pyramid pendant is the degrees in the angles. The triangle is 51° 51’. This angle, as known using ancient numerology, assists the body in clearing ill energy. Not only the body, but when used like I have in the pendant, the body is the focus for the clearing. The pyramid has been used for centuries and I am sure will continue to be.

Customers do not necessarily know the meaning behind it but the feedback speaks for itself. I have people I don’t know stopping me in the street to tell me how they just love their triangle pendant. Customers do not take it off and express that when they wear it they feel amazing.

So thank you Serge Benhayon and Universal Medicine for re-introducing me to the magic that is in us all.

Soulful Sensations

An eclectic mix of industry meets coast, strong yet femimine. The Byron Bay label has recently had much success at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, showcasing these eye-catching designs and receiving fabulous feedback. Designer Jacqueline McCoach reveals the inner essence behind her label and latest Bespoke collection to Rachel Bilic.

How did your interest in jewellery design begin? I have always been interested in design. When I was younger I did a bit of modelling and from there always thought I would design clothes, but my mum encouraged me to start beading. I began making these beaded necklaces that would take me hours and things grew from there, self-teaching the whole way.

What is it that motivates you when creating JBJ?
I simply want to make pieces that allow people to be themselves and don’t impose an image. To create jewellery that feels great to wear and brings joy to the moment.

Tell us about your brand statement: JBJ ‘is not made to appeal to those who identify themselves by status symbols or flashy accessories but designed to inspire people to know themselves by their own true quality’. The importance lies in the intention behind the designs. Some companies create jewellery solely for profit, others to build an image or reputation. I find a lot of brands more than anything, are trying to sell an image that appeals to those who don’t have a strong sense of self and therefore feel less in the face of advertising. This then creates a need for them to purchase the product so they can feel good about themselves. At JBJ we design for people so they can enjoy the jewellery without any ill intention behind it, by creating from a love and understanding that our customers are already amazing and our jewellery simply compliments this.

What personal qualities do you think comes through in your designs?
I think all of me comes through in my work. The way I see it is that all art is a product of the way people live and the choices they make, which then creates the feeling of the art that is produced. Because of this, I choose to live in a way that is as loving and gentle as I know how, so these qualities come through in my jewellery.

The materials you use in your collections offer such inimitable and unconventional stones, contours and cuts. How do you keep at the forefront of discovering and utilising these unique materials? I am always looking at what is out there to use, research is part of why I love my work. Looking for and finding new materials is a lot of fun. I select what appeals to me at the time, not worrying whether or not people will agree with what I choose.

So is this how you find you insperation for design? Yes my life is my inspiration. I don’t necessarily go out and look for inspiration, it just happens. I can be inspired by a friend, moment, place or a person’s jewellery and things grow from there.

Each of your pieces is designed ‘to enhance your inner light’. How do you think your jewellery does this for your customers? My experience of selling direct to the public is always interesting, people really connect with a piece and when they put it on it becomes a part of their expression. JBJ is for thoes who are aligned to the shapes and colours that we offer.

Your latest collection Bespoke reveals an enticing range, what has been your vision behind it? So far my ranges have been very wearable. The idea behind Bespoke was to create a bigger, bolder range that were more like pieces of art. Not necessarily something you will wear every day, but definitely something you will treasure forever. It also gives me an area where I can, on a weekly basis create new and amazing pieces where the materials will always be changing. It's fun!

Is there a favourite piece you designed for the Bespoke collection? I love rings; I wear at least 6 rings at any given time, most from the Harmony range. There are heaps of small rings available that you can stack on to the one finger, which I love. From the Bespoke it’s pretty hard to choose one, but at the moment it’s the Phyrite Cube ring.

New Range Coming Soon...

Here are a few images from the new ranges, which will be available in stores and online mid August. Open Heart range is in keeping with JBJ usual style bringing out a couple of new shapes such as stars and the small open heart although some see it as a broken heart.

Bespoke range is big and bold using heaps of crystals and colour. Each piece is different to the next and I will be bringing out new styles regularly so if you want to keep up to date with the new items be sure to join our mailing list. Enjoy!

How to make an antler jewellery display

So as promised I will tell you where to get antlers and how to make a stand for your jewellery as seen in my previous blog post.

But first I am going to show how to make a rustic jewellery tree - much cooler than the fake ones you see in the shops - like what is pictured below. You can also use antlers instead of tree branches for this one too.

The Finished Product:

You will need some tree brances or an antler or a set of antlers which you can puchase from Tarlo and Graham they are really helpful, if you need them posted I'm sure they will do that for you.

You will also need:

  • Quick dry cement from any hardware shop
  • A bucket whatever size you like (and don't be too attached cos it is going to get destroyed in the process)
  • Spray paint - I used white but use whatever colour you like

First mix the cement in the bucket with a little water, then place antlers in to set -  so easy.

Once set cut the bucket off and paint.

You can also mosaic the cement base or put it on a rustic old pot, I have a thing for old brass pots and vases.

If you want one like the one I made in 11:11 you just need an old piece of wood. Finish it with a little sand paper, drill into the bottom of the antler and through the wood then screw the two together - easy! If you have any questions leave them in the comments.

On my last trip to Melbourne I went to Tarlo and Graham pictured below. I love this shop, it has heaps of weird little bits and pieces. I really enjoy just walking around these kind of shops even if I buy nothing. There was heaps of taxidermy in there when I went which is kind of creepy but strangely attractive. It is changing all the time with new stock arriving weekly so I can't wait to go back on my next trip.

11:11 Byron Bay

Fletcher street in the heart of Byron is the home of fashion outlet 11:11. When they opened about a year ago Ellie the owner found me at the Byron Markets and wanted Jewels by Jacqueline in store. Not only is she a super cool chick but she has really good taste in jewellery :)

The shop has all the latest fashionista brands like Lucette, Zimmerman, Friend of mine, Stolen girlfriends club and heaps more.....But my favorite and unfortunatly not for sale item is the hand calved wood planks Ellie's Dad makes. There are heaps of different designs, like anchors and hearts.

This wood art inspired me to make the set of antlers that my jewellery is displayed on. Just so you don't think I am a crazy hunter or deer hater, they actually shed the antlers once a year to grow a bigger stronger pair so it's just recycling nature. My next post i will share where to get the antlers and how easy they are to make.

Island Luxe, Bangalow, NSW

Sounds like a case of opposites but somehow Bangalow near Byron Bay has become a sleepy village town / vibrant shopping mecca in the last few years.

There are heaps of fashion and antique shops in Bangalow that will inspire the inner shopaholic but there is something particularly special about Island Luxe (and its not just because they have an awesome range of my jewellery there...right up on the front counter...to the left...) Seriously though Island Luxe was one of my favourite stores before they started to stock my jewellery so you can imagine how cool it was when owners Sam and Helen took my burgeoning label under their wing and started stocking it next to the rest of their exciting, mostly international labels, like True Religion Denim, Rear and many others. And they dont stop at Fashion and Jewellery they also stock unique and interesting furniture and homeware pieces the likes of which you won't find anywhere else.

But for me, the highlight of the shop (besides the jewellery) is the muted toned feminine dresses you will always find hidden amongst the racks of high end fashion. With labels like Camilla, Winter Kate, Freddy the Club, Bassic and so much more you will want to spend some quaiity time browsing this visually creative environment.

After shopping be sure to get Lunch at cafe Ate which is the downstairs baby of Satiate Restaurant a One Hat Awarded establishment serving the best in local produce. If your lucky you may just catch me on my days off from creating a jewellery empire working behind the coffee machine making beverages with love instead of jewellery . . . I am the one wearing all the jewellery.

Oh and Island Luxe just opened a second shop in Byron Bay - the details in the design of the new shop is what I love most - things like old rustic pipes for clothes racks and silver dipped light globes. Be sure to check out the newest Island Luxe at the end of Marvell Street, Byron Bay.
